Fried chicken wings are a football season favorite. Okay, maybe more like an everyday favorite! But there’s something special about enjoying them during game days . . .

It’s similar to having turkey on Thanksgiving – you can have turkey any time of the year, but it’s even more special during Thanksgiving.

So even though it’s always a good time to have chicken wings, it’s even better to sit down on the couch with a big platter full of crispy wings and a few bottles of ice cold beer with a game on the tv.

While we like to indulge on fried foods every now and then, if we can find a healthier and just as delicious alternative, we’ll definitely go the lighter route. And we’re happy to share that we have found the secret to crispy chicken wings without all the deep-frying!

The secrets are 1) tossing them in baking powder, which draws out excess moisture, and 2) baking the wings with space in between to allow air to circulate for maximum crispiness. See how it’s done with this video here:

Prepping Smarts

  • Make sure to pat the wings dry with paper towels! You’ll want to remove as much moisture as possible for crispier wings. Then toss with baking powder and salt and set aside for 20 minutes to remove additional moisture.

Equipment Smarts

  • Sheet Pan – makes it easy to transfer chicken wings to and from the oven all at once
  • Cooling Rack – placing chicken wings directly on a cooling rack allows air to circulate to more surface area, which means more crispiness
  • Saucepan – used to cook the spicy miso sauce that gets tossed with the wings
