Our Kitchen Hero this week, Shawna, grew up learning how to cook. But her increasing food knowledge and experimentation allowed her to get creative with recipes and become a better cook. Follow along in her Hero in the Kitchen story below!

Outside of the kitchen I: devour books, move my body with weight training and hiking, and love my animals.
If I had to eat one food for the rest of my life, it would be: some combination of bread and cheese.
I cook because: I love adventures in the kitchen.

HOW DID YOU LEARN TO COOK?

Watching and helping my grandmothers. Poring over cookbooks from an early age and “cooking” with anything available – mud pie, anyone? Asking and learning about food on my travels to other countries. Fearless experimentation.

WHAT’S BEEN YOUR BIGGEST COOKING CHALLENGE?

Over-complicating things.

How has your cooking routine changed since starting Cook Smarts’ meal plans?

I spend less time planning and shopping which allows more time for cooking. Less food waste. The menu options make it so easy to adjust recipes to suit my preferences. I often use the recipes as templates and then add my own creative touches.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR PROUDEST KITCHEN MOMENT.

Baking picture-perfect loaves of sourdough bread. There’s just something about baking your own bread!

WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR HEALTH AND SUCCESS IN THE KITCHEN?

Focus on fewer but quality ingredients. Load up on veggies that you love. Don’t worry about the latest food fads. Be open to culinary adventures.
